“I’ve Been There Before,” the new single/music video from Jesse Judies, follows on the heels of his latest EP, Colors of Youth, and presages his upcoming long player, Coup De Foudre’.
Calling both San Francisco and Sydney, Australia his musical homes, singer-songwriter and producer Jesse Judies is the musical project of Nick Bray, who began his career playing guitar for indie outfit Music For Animals, followed by fronting EagleWolfSnake.
In 2018, Bray started producing music as Jesse Judies, beginning work on his debut album Thoughts in a Loop. After mixing and mastering Thoughts in a Loop, COVID arrived, and Bray moved to Australia to be with his partner. During the pandemic, he released his single/music video, “Chemistry,” in 2020, and then released Thoughts in a Loop.
As the pandemic dragged on, Bray began collaborating with Aussie singer-songwriter Sasha March, producer Ollie Brown, and former Lungs and Limbs drummer Matt Power. The collaborations blossomed into a new record, entitled Coup De Foudre’, which documents Bray’s experience of uprooting himself during the pandemic and finding his footing in Australia.
Bray’s music distinguishes itself from run-of-the-mill indie-rock because of his unique perspective on life, which, blended with tantalizing harmonics and bravura production, gives rise to luxurious sonic charisma.
“I’ve Been There Before” rolls out on a creamy, syncopated rhythm topped by soft, tropical surfaces, giving the tune a plush exotic flow. Dreamy, velvety vocals imbue the lyrics with a warm, nonchalant aura as silky, radiant vocal harmonies add depth and dimension.
“When I’m mashing no need for clashing / No more or getting involved / Got my demos, ten gigs of memos to comb before I get home / Spring around me, the rain it found me I know…I’m home.”
With “I’ve Been There Before,” Jesse Judies zeros in on the sumptuous, ultra-catchy sweet spot, evoking a seductive, relaxing mood.
